Nonis fired in Vancouver
April 14th, 2008 by thewordbirdIt was reported on ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ just moments ago that Dave Nonis has been relieved of his duties as General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks.
Let the rumour mill churn out the names of Steve Tambellini, Scott Arniel and even Pat Burns or Pat Quinn…..it is too bad that Scott Howson (formerly A-GM of the Oilers) who was hired as GM of the Blue Jackets last year was not available now. He is a great hockey mind.
Any thoughts guys and gals?

Nonis didn’t deserve firing. You can’t evaluate a GM on the third season of a four-year building plan, based on not making the playoffs because of a ridiculous number of injuries.
Nonis had his goaltending and defense in place, and had solid third- and fourth- line forwards developing. All that remained was to clean up the top two lines and you’ve got a dynamite contender in place.
Francesco Aquilini fired Brian Burke who went on to win a Stanley Cup in Anaheim. He fired Dave Nonis who pulled off the trade of the decade (Bertuzzi for Luongo) and promises only to get better with experience.
Aquilini is starting to remind me of Harold Ballard. Hope the ‘nucks win a cup before he totally ruins the franchise.

I completely agree with you SensFan. Nonis was not given a fair shake and will undoubtably be afforded an effort elsewhere in some capacity.
As for Burkie, he inherited a great framework in Anaheim and added some key pieces that melded well together and drove hard through the playoffs. I know it was hard for Senator fans to witness one of Murray’s teams(former GM of Anaheim) force out his current one out for the Cup last June. Burke is one of the league’s most colourful characters.
