Mellanby present!

June 1st, 2008 by thewordbird

It seems that Scott Mellanby has indeed taken his role seriously.

In reading various blogs and reports on the NHL Combine in Toronto, I’ve seen Mellanby’s name mentioned as ‘in attendance’. The Canucks’ of course must be present to interview and observe players that are of interest to them and to see which draftees could fit into a role with Vancouver immediately as well as developmental selections for later. It would be of interest to learn which kids Mellanby has been most impressed with as opposed to the scouting staff that has been with the team for years.

American Colin Wilson has surely cemented his stock as a Top10 presence, especially with the big-time defenders in Colten Teubert, Zach Bogosian, Drew Doughty, Tyler Myers, Luke Schenn and Alex Pietrangelo. Wilson is of course complimented by Russian skilled skater, Nikita Filatov. Steven Stamkos is thought to be all but the property of the Lightning.

Some youngsters that have really vaulted up scout’s lists and raised eyebrows all at once have got to be considered at this time of year. Joel Champagne is a built winger that has elevated his status more than likely from The Hockey News’ #50 rank. Zac Dalpe has had a strong showing as a BCJHLer in the physical tests. Kyle Beach and Mikkel Boedker are highly ranked guys I’d like to hear a bit more about there, but the Kitchener Rangers took the team to the Bahamas for achieving the Memorial Cup Finals and I have only read interviews with Beach. Mattias Tedenby has lacklustre numbers this year, but remember….he is a teenager on HV-71 and helped them win the league. We will see a lot more of that kid. Jared Staal will also become the fourth of the four brothers to be drafted into the NHL, but by which team?

Kudos to Mellanby.
