Captain materials
September 1st, 2008 by thewordbirdWith Markus Naslund departing for the Big Apple and Trevor Linden (setting down one of his many hats) retiring, the Canucks must examine the team for the next player to don the “C”.
Rumour mills and in regarding the circumstances surrounding the Canucks has the “C” being made available to Willie Mitchell. Many would regard Mattias Ohlund as a natural selection and his being left out can signal that he could very well be made available as a trade option. Ohlund’s value is still there from an objective view from an outsider GM and the return could very well favour the Canucks. That said, I really respect the play and demeanor of Ohlund. He is a tireless worker and a real team guy. A few injuries and his big-minute play has been diminished a bit. Ohlund has World Championship Gold, Silver and Bronze, an Olympic Gold Medal and his last points scored was the 300th of his career.
Now Cody Hodgson gives reason to at least join his name to the future Captain discussion. I do not mean the next couple seasons obviously, he has not even made the team yet. So in the interim and with the best chance to win now Willie Mitchell is a very ’safe’ choice. Also, a good one.

“I was the youngest guy in the NHL when I first broke in, and the Vancouver Canucks gave me an opportunity to play right away. It could of been overwhelming, but my upbringing prepared me well. I was mature and could handle new situations.” Trevor Linden

Ohlund has been noted to be a locker room favourite for captaincy, but we’ll have to see is Vigneault and/or Gillis feel the same way.
