Sedins remarks
September 12th, 2008 by thewordbirdWith GM Like Gillis gettin’ down to busine…er, a plate of food with the Sedin twins on Wednesday, it is time to weigh in about the contract bally-hoo.
In short and supported by the interviews held on the TEAM 1040 radio and Canucks.com, Gilllis had not yet met with the bros and so they broke bread. There will be a hell of a lot of bread between them. Both boys are set to enter the last year of their current deals and are entitled to hefty raises. That makes people’s collars sweat thinkin’ “Hell, I could do what those Sedin sisters can do,” and the like. My ass. These are a couple of very durable and athletic forwards that are not superstars, but they are consistent scorers and quality team mates.
Henrik Sedin
————
last three seasons:
246 games, 43 goals, 183 assists, 232 points, +36, 4 game-winners
That is an average of every game in three years, 77 pts, and +12.
Daniel Sedin
————
245 games, 87 goals, 143 assists, 229 points, +32, 19 game-winners
That is every game in the past year minus one plus an average of 76 pts, +11 and 6 game-winners!
That in of itself is proof of their worth and we will down the road get into the struggles in the playoffs where all Sedin-haters get their ammo. THE team hasn’t faired all that well, yes we are aware.
I am going to list the top LW/C combos in the league and compare just production last season:

The Sedin’s really are remarkably consistent in both good and bad ways (looking forward to hearing your playoff thoughts), but they cannot be the focus of a team’s checking or they get shut down like we have seen time and time again. As soon as a team starts focusing on shutting down their cycle game by being physical along the boards they tend to fade.
If ever the Canucks could bring in some help on the first line and drop these guys down to the second line again then we’d really see success for Vancouver. Until then I don’t see anything changing with the team in terms of success.

I think that the additions of Demitra, Wellwood and Hordichuk (obviously not offensively for the big guy) will provide Vigneault some options. More than people realize. Mason Raymond is going to surprise a lot of fans on the West Coast and surprise many on the East. Hodgson will have an effect, even if he does not make the team THIS year.
A healthy defense with Salo, Kraijek and Ohlund (possibly Nycholat) moving the puck up to the offense will help.

I’m not a big fan of Raymond personally, but I guess I could be surprised.
One of the problems is that as long as Ohlund and Salo are on the back end there will always be injuries. Salo in particular just doesn’t seem to have the ability to stay healthy.
Demitra and Wellwood are also both not examples of great health, so the reality is that the Canucks man games lost this year will still be fairly high.

Well, I appreciate the input Jstainer.
Salo has missed a brutal amount of games since becoming a Canuck, you’re right. Ohlund has completed full seasons regularily though he has missed chuncks in 3 seasons in his career, including 29 games last year.
To say that the Canucks’ man games lost WILL be fairly high is an assumption I am not willing to make. I personally believe that the strength and condtitioning coach and Dave Gagner will work together to bring that down substantially. To say that is presumptuous and not a leap I am willing to make.
Gagner is of course the owner of a high-performance condtioning facility in London and Gilis thought ahead on that one. Steve Bernier and Cody Hodgson spent time there with Sam and Dave Gagner.
I agree that Demitra and Wellwood could have attended and have had glaring streaks of injury marr their careers so far.
May I inquire as to why you are not a fan of Raymond’s? I think his speed alone brings a lot to the team and especially this year with Hordichuk and Johnson taking regular icetime. He has shown a scoring touch and seems to be a coachable kid; something Ryan Walter and Alain Vigneault probably relish at this point.
