Canucks remember - Dave Babych
November 10th, 2008 by thewordbirdDave Babych is a pivotal member of the 1993-94 team that dug and clawed its way to the Stanley Cup Final against the New York Rangers. In remembrance, I’ll take a quick look back at his career with Vancouver. I resist the temptation to revisit our loss this summer.
Babych was a very gritty defender and his moustache had some offensive prowess as well. Vancouver received Babych from the Minnesota North Stars for Tom Kurvers. He had previously enjoyed a fine career with the Portland Winterhawks (WHL), Winnipeg Jets, and Hartford Whalers. The Canucks knew that they were acquiring a robust playoff performer and this was a key inclusion to the fold that boasted Geoff Courtnall, Pavel Bure, Jyrki Lumme, Trevor Linden, Jeff Brown, and Kirk Maclean. His 62 points in 114 career playoff games were outstanding for the under-rated defenseman.
Perhaps Babych’s finest moment was scored on June 9, 1994 when Dave scored a goal on a rush he finished with Bure in Game # 5 of the Finals against New York.
Also of note:
-Babych was involved in the movie SLAP SHOT, with a small role as an actor.
-Babych is the only Canucks defenseman that has recorded a hat-trick in a regular season game.
