Team Canada Watch
December 8th, 2009 by Jason ChenAnother week, another countdown. Expect the races to get heated especially after Steve Yzerman announced that the team will be announced on December 30th, moving it up one day. Brian Burke has announced that he will be picking his Team USA too, as just for kicks I’ve done so as well.
GOALTENDERS
1 (3) Roberto Luongo, Van (best Canadian goalie this week: 2-0, 1 SO, .970 SV%)

3 (2) Marc-Andre Fleury, Pit (great showing against CHI but loses to lowly CAR)
4 (7) Marty Turco, Dal (Stars inconsistent but Turco shining in last 2 with 1.45/.952)
5 (5) Carey Price, Mtl (loss to Toronto hurts but bounced back with wins over BOS, PHI)
6 (4) Steve Mason, Cbs (3.90 GAA and .831 SV% gives reason to sit him)
7 (6) Ray Emery, Phi (winless in last 5 starts with 5.36 GAA and .814 SV%)
DEFENSEMEN
1 (4) Mike Green, Wsh (4 points against rival Flyers, +4, 1 GWG)
2 (9) Jay Bouwmeester, Cgy (perfect on PK but 0-12 PP in December)
3 (6) Dan Hamhuis, Nsh (if not Weber it’s Hamhuis - 2 points, +2, 4 PIM)
4 (2) Stephane Robidas, Dal (needs to score to get noticed)
5 (1) Duncan Keith, Chi (just one assist and -5 to start December)
6 (3) Scott Niedermayer, Ana (worst shooting % since ‘97 and on pace for worst +/- )
7 (5) Shea Weber, Nsh (quiet week but one of reasons Preds 5 games over .500)

9 (7) Brent Seabrook, Chi (struggling in December like Keith)
10 (10) Dion Phaneuf, Cgy (minutes continue to be taken by Bouwmeester)
11 (16) Drew Doughty, LA (great bounce-back ability: 2 points, +5, GWG)

15 (20) Ed Jovanovski, Phx (just one goal but Coyotes are winning)
16 (12) Robyn Regehr, Cgy (feeling the effects of Bouwmeester - just 18:40 TOI vs. SJ)
17 (19) Brian Campbell, Chi (only Hawk on list to post +, but still underwhelming)
18 (17) Kyle Quincey, Col (Avs had 2 PPG all week and Quincey on ice for both)
19 (13) Marc Staal, NYR (has a tough hill to climb and Rangers are plummetting)
20 (18) Cam Barker, Chi (can he? Teams hesitant to bank on young PP QB at $3m+)
21 (21) Michael Del Zotto, NYR (continues free-falling with -9 in last 5 games)
FORWARDS
1 (1) Sidney Crosby, Pit (losses hurt but can’t fault his individual play - 3 G, 4 Points)

3 (2) Jarome Iginla, Cgy (losers of 2 of last 3 and zero goals from Iggy)

11 (6) Rick Nash, Cbs (8-goal October, 7-goal November, 0-goal December thus far)
12 (19) Martin St. Louis, TB (scores in bunches but woeful -13 in losing games)
13 (21) Mike Cammalleri, Mtl (2nd hat trick, 4 goals, 2 GWG, Gainey’s best investment)
14 (15) Travis Zajac, NJ (20 points in 20 wins, 5 points in 8 losses - it’s not coincidence)
15 (8) Dustin Penner, Edm (just saw him traded for Brodeur in fantasy)
16 (25) Shane Doan, Phx (on pace for worst year since 2007 - little urgency in his play)
17 (17) Jordan Staal, Pit (5-point October, 10-point November, 2 goals in last 3)
18 (9) Mike Richards, Phi (losers of 5 straight and zero points, in danger of losing spot)
19 (18) Eric Staal, Car (’Canes 2-0 in December but Staal yet to score in winning game)

21 (16) Brad Richards, Dal (half of points come from PP but Stars 0-9 last 3 games)
22 (23) Mike Ribeiro, Dal (gives up easily - 15 points in 13 wins, 8 points in 16 losses)
23 (22) Jeff Carter, Phi (six-game goal-less drought longest since 2007-08)
24 (12) Derek Roy, Buf (played just 15:56 against NJ - little versatility to speak of)
25 (28) Mike Fisher, Ott (2 more goals - crossing fingers for Richards to drop out)
26 (30) James Neal, Dal (forget how November ended - 11 shots, 2 goals in December)
27 (20) Jason Spezza, Ott (drawing the ire of Melnyk and Murray)
28 (29) Dan Cleary, Det (3 goals in last 4… but probably not even considered)
29 (11) Rich Peverley, Atl (naysayers singing “I told you so” - pointless in last 4)
30 (27) Andy McDonald, StL (last multi-point game was November 10)
Dropped out: Cam Ward (laceration), Brent Burns (concussion), Simon Gagne (hernia), Ryan Smyth (upper body), Milan Lucic (ankle)

Hey great post as always.
I’ll focus on the American b/c its a change
First, I can basically guarantee you Komi will make the team as its GM’ed and coached by Burke and Wilson and Burke we’ll take him, if for no other reason then to save face for signing him as a FA.
As well Callahan has gone ice cold, and while he hasn’t been red hot, I think Okposo would make it over him.
As well JVR and Connoly/Pominville we’ll put up a fight, but JVR is too young.
I also feel like Modano we’ll make it, because if he is playing he’ll be on the team, just like Canada would have put Sakic on the team.
Cheers!

I’m glad you mentioned Komisarek - when I picked USA’s defense the last spot I had come down to three players: Komisarek, Bogosian, or Hainsey. As much as Komisarek seems to be shoo-in due to his ties, I have a hard time believing he’ll be picked (especially if USA intends on winning) because he’s had a very disappointing season so far. I think whatever he brings to the table (size, grit, toughness) can be already provided by Orpik, Johnson, and Suter.
Callahan doesn’t have the points to show for it, but he is by far USA’s most physical and bruising winger. If Burke intends to have an ultimate grind line, Callahan is it. I would have Dubinsky over him but he’s out with an injury so Callahan it is. He also plays a significant amount of minutes for Tortorella, who’s an assistant.
I had a hard time leaving out Modano as well, but at this point I think the veteran leadership is already well-represented with Rafalski, Drury, Thomas, Orpik, and Langenbrunner.
By BCapp on Dec 9, 2009
I am gonna read Canada’s info later and we can discuss that.
But in regards to Komi, I am not denying he hasn’t earned the spot. But I just don’t see Burke being a big enough man to admit that. I can see Komi making it over Orpik and we’ll see if Bogosian (as a non-camp guy) gets the call, though he definitely deserves it.
EJ - Rafalski
Martin - Whitney
Komi - Suter (shut down line)
Bogosian
Is a pretty damn solid D-core. Whitney has also underwhelmed this year. He is far from bad, but he hasn’t been great.
In regards to Callahan I’ll say flat out, I don’t enough about the Rangers so I’ll take your word.
I still say Modano will make it as he is the face of American hockey, even if he doesn’t get much minutes. Though there is a good veteran core there, particularly around Langenbrunner/Drury/Rafalski.
Though I would argue that Thomas isn’t really a typical ‘veteran’ as he’s never been to the games for the Americans and spent most of his career in the A.
Do you agree Miller has locked in the #1 unless he collapses?
By BCapp on Dec 9, 2009
I think its pretty clear in Canada it will be Brodeur/Luongo fighting for #1 and Price/Turco/Fleury for number 3 with Fleury in the lead (I personally think it should be Price…and I am a TML fan)
By Jason Chen on Dec 9, 2009
I certainly hope Burke and Wilson are beyond playing favourites and naming Komisarek…
The USA defense is probably their strongest suit. It’s not as deep as Canada’s, or Sweden’s, but definitely could make or break that team. I’m a little iffy on their forwards but if all 13 forwards play well, there’s no denying they will medal. Also, Whitney, while underwhelming, averages 26:03 TOI/G, sixth best in the league.
Modano was a hard cut to make too and I understand what he means to USA Hockey, but like Burke said it’s time to move on. I would have picked Modano if he and the Stars were playing better but I just can’t see a spot for him. If anything, he would replace Drury or Gomez, but I think both are better players.
Thomas is certainly not a veteran by the standard definitions, but his struggle to make it to the league and the obstacles he’s had to overcome may resonate with this underdog USA squad.
Some stats for Callahan:
106 hits, 2nd in league
26 blocked shots, 11th among forwards
19:34 TOI, 3rd on team among forwards
2:56 SH TOI, 2nd on team among forwards
also only 4 giveaways this year
And I agree, Brodeur/Luongo, but then Fleury for the third string role. He’s got a Cup and great clutch play to show for it. Miller’s the de facto #1 for USA - it’s his job to lose.

Dec 10/09 My Team Canada at this point:
(Forward L to R) ,(1) nash, crosby, iginla (2) toews, getzlaf, perry (3)marleau,thornton, heatley (Checking line) morrow, m. richards,
j. staal, (Extra forward) brad richards (Defense left-right)
(1) niedermayer- weber (2)pronger- boyle (3) keith-doughty plus
bouwmeester (Goal) brodeur,fleury, luongo
This is a very serious line-up based on size, experience, speed,
youth, current year stats, face-off success, dependability, flexability
leadership, Honorable mention to: stamkos, carter, penner, zajac
fisher,st louis, lecavalier, m. green, regehr and sadly, e. staal
By BCapp on Dec 10, 2009
Hey John,
I agree with most things, but a couple differences.
1) this is probably a meaningless difference, but I think the Getzlaf line would be the third line as it is a powerhouse/checking/offensive line
While the Thorton line is more directly offensive and those are usually considered second. But again this doesn’t really mean anything.
2) I can’t see St. Louis not making this team. He has had an incredible year and over recent years he has been the most succesful and consistent of that old killer tampa line.
As well He is probably Canada’s second best RW (Iginla than Perry/St. Louis), although for this team, Perry will have more to offer, because we have more skilled guys (like St. Louis) than power forwards (like Perry).
I also don’t see how J. Staal has played his way onto this team. There are plenty of players who can play just as strong a defensive game/on the PK who have much more offensive potential. I’d take Carter over him. Possibly even Fisher.
I’ll explain Fisher. Fisher is having an incredible year and is a noted two way player who can play wing and C.
The most important tangible that Fisher brings however is the ability to play well and keep in game mode with limited ice time. A lot of the other players on this team are used to bbeing stars and may not be able to play well without enough minutes to keep them pumped.
3)In regards to B Richards being the extra forward, I really believe that that has to go to Stamkos. While we are SO deep at C we can’t guarantee him a spot, but he has played his way into a spot on this team. He has the 3rd most goals in the league in the last 50 regular season games.
4)I don’t see why everyone puts Neids on this team. He hasn’t earned it this year. He just hasn’t played that well. We have enough veterans on this team and he doesn’t need to be on it. And if he does make it, he has to play with Pronger b/c htey are better than the sum of their parts.
I also think Regehr has earned a spot as the best Canadian shut down D.
While I love Doughty and think he has earned it, I don’t see him getting it because of youth and lack of experience. Maybe the 7th spot.
I also believe b/c of chemistry reasons Keith should play with Seabrook.
And I heard an interesting point from some commentators that only Green or Boyle will make this team, not both…And I agree. This is what I see:
Pronger-Weber
Keith-Seabrook
Boyle-Regehr
Bouwemeister.
And I say the order on goalies is Brodeur, Luongo, Fleury.
Cheers:)
And Jason can’t wait till next week to start this again!

Dec 11/09 A good response from BCapp on ‘ My Team Canada’ at
this point. Some further comments, (1) the order of the lines #1,2,
3, …, matters not, . . . ,whomever babcock chooses to use for
whatever match up, is the key. (2) I really like marty st louis, plays with a huge heart, led all point scorers in World’s in Zurich last April plus an all star there,. . . ,yes having a good year but I don’t like his goal output, his -4, age 34 and size although he is a very
powerful little bugger, (3) Others have also mentioned they can’t see J. Staal. I like the fact that he’s a big moose with a great reach,
he can skate fast, he’s won a Cup, a 1/2 draft and he might give some of those big Russian F’s or D something to think about. Size
will be a factor here, ( if we get there). Who handles ovechkin,
malkin, kovalchuk? I watched big volchenkov bounce mike richards
all over the ice in Ottawa’s 2-0 win over Flyers last night, (4) yes,
mike fisher, with or without the girlfriend has much to offer, . . . ,
speed, size, right hand shot, PPG’s and game winners, definitely a contender. Like stamkos a ton with those big goal totals although
he’s fallen off somewhat, of late and now he’s hurting a bit.
b richards is a cerebral player with very big stats this year, espec
the assists, . . . , can play LW or his natural center, great on the point on the PP, also a former Cup and C Smythe winner, a very
versatile guy, great in ‘big game’ situations. I can’t argue with your comments about s nieder but he is a BC boy and he is a 100 %
future ‘hall of famer’ and he’s won everything. Will be hard for our
‘brain trust’ to keep him off the”Team.” I do like regehr as another
left hand shot and someone must go. Tough choices !
I still think doughty should be there. The last I looked, he leads all
our D in goals, is high in PP and GWG’s, 1/1 in shootouts, a great
plus 10, yes young at 20 but cool as a cucumber under pressure
and growing in leaps and bounds again this year. The total player.
I do prefer combos that play together F or D, hence good argument
for keith, seabrook, getzlaf, perry, that big san jose threesome.
Finally, jon toews is an absolute “must” on this team IMO. He has it all, . . . , team captain at age 21, size, speed, smarts, face-off and
SO success, a plus 12 a gives a total effort constantly. It’s all
about X’s and O’s, isn’t it ? Stay tuned until Dec 30.

Hey man,
All good points. I’ll see ya back here next week!
Hahaha
Cheers.
By Jason Chen on Dec 11, 2009
john,
I agree that Jordan Staal deserves some consideration. A lot of people think Staal needs to score to get noticed but he really doesn’t - if he makes Canada he’d be a checking line centre whose job is to shut down the opposition’s top line. However, considering the talent level he really needs to impress and I’m talking about Selke-worthy defensive play here, something which hasn’t quite materialized yet…
Don’t forget that St. Louis is a real smart player and Perry/Getzlaf gets into trouble sometimes with their positioning and aggressiveness… St. Louis might be able to off-set that and he’ll be playing with the best linemates he’s ever had…
I don’t think size up front will be a big problem for Canada. Iginla, Perry, Getzlaf, Thornton, all locks for the team, all are at least 6′2″ or bigger. Even Crosby at 5′11″ is one of the strongest players I’ve ever seen.
By john bennett on Dec 11, 2009
Dec 11/09
Jason,
Jordan Staal would not have to be a major scorer, if he plays on this team. I agree, a checking line role would be his best fit, . . . ,
isn’t that supposed to be Mike Richard’s spot though ? But what ’s
been going on with those Flyers, lately ? Some big things seem to
be wrong in that dressing room. This leads the discussion on to
Jeff Carter who many feel was an absolute lock for a roster spot,
[perhaps because of the 46 goals last year], but IMO, he hasn’t done nearly enough to have a position as of this date. If Carter goes on, who comes off the roster ?
If Marty St Louis, [generally responsible defensively], does connect with Getzlaf and Perry, he would likely have to move over to the left side, [normally, he's a left hand shot who prefers right wing], but Perry is the natural right winger. I believe MSL could make that adjustment easily.
The checking line is the threesome I’m struggling with the most.
The unofficial consensus picks a while back seemed to be, (LW)
Morrow, (C) M. Richards and (RW) Doan. To this date, Doan seems to be a long way off a roster position. Perhaps, Mike Fisher, [Right], another natural center, could slide over to the right side teaming with Morrow/M. Richards. Fisher is big, fast and rugged and is having a record season, so far. Whoever plays RW
on our checking line might well have to face Alex Ovechkin at some
point during the tournament. That checker will have to be one very tough dude, although OV wanders all over the place. The entire line
will have major responsibilities here but I think I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Got to remember, . . . , it’s one game at a time.
One large downer for me, as of this date, has been the combination of Eric Staal’s enormous talent and his horrific season. Very little time for ES to really light things up. I know the
“brain trust” would love it if he did. There are even experts who are
prepared to plant Staal on the final roster right now. I don’t believe
he’s earned a spot yet and time is quickly running out.
Canada will ice a super team to be sure. I’d just like a nicely
balanced group, . . . , you know, the “team” mindset not the
individual “star” mindset.
By Jason Chen on Dec 12, 2009
I totally agree with you there john. But we really don’t have much to work with. Other than the success we’ve had at 2002, Canada has traditionally faired quite poorly at the Olympics since the inclusion of NHL stars. 1998 was a disaster, as was 2006. Exactly how and who to pick is still a work in progress.
The checking line centre role is Mike Richards’ to lose, but the Flyers are in shambles and his leadership has been called into question by Pronger. Thankfully in Vancuover Richards will be held with minimal leadership responsibilities and I daresay playing third or fourth fiddle on the depth chart might get him back on track. I think he’s still trying to do a little too much sometimes. No doubt Jeff Carter has been a disappointment but Canada doesn’t lack any power forward goal scorers. Selecting him would be redundant.
Personally, I’ve already written off Eric Staal and Vinny Lecavalier. After watching the Washington-Carolina game (bits of it), it seems as though Staal’s very tentative with the puck and isn’t playing anywhere near the level we know he can play at. Lecavalier’s no longer the number one centre even for a mediocre team and Canada has just too much depth down the middle to make room for those two underachievers.

Good points, Jason, . . . , I agree. JB
